Geocaching has been called "the world's treasure hunt", and whether you are an experienced geocacher or brand-new to the sport, you'll find dozens of caches hidden in the Grand Marais area. This fun family activity is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the spectacular scenery in our part of the U.P. If you have a hand-held GPS and a pair of comfortable shoes, you are ready to hunt for geocaches! Find the coordinates of a geocache, get yourself there using your GPS, and hunt around until you find a geocache container. Sign the log book and swap a goody or two, and be sure to log your find at the official geocaching site, www.geocaching.com.
The best place to learn about geocaching is at the official geogaching website. Here you'll find instructions and lots of guidance, and you can search for geocaches in the Grand Marais area. Be sure to create an account for yourself, so you can log your geocaches and share your experiences with others!
We have a geocaching guide for the area that is available in the local stores, or you can download it here. In it you'll find an overview of the sport, tips for geocaching in the area, and a list of eight caches to get you started.
