- [Waterfalls](https://grandmaraismichigan.com/visit-us/attractions/waterfalls/): Most of the waterfalls in this area are the result of water running over a shelf or cliffs of limey sandstone called the Munising Formation. This formation of rock extends from Tahquamenon Falls, some 75 east of the Lakeshore, to Laughing Whitefish Falls, about 30 miles west of the Lakeshore. The Munising formation is also called the Northern Michigan cuesta or escarpment. Estimates differ regarding the number of waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula, ranging from 150 to 300. - [History](https://grandmaraismichigan.com/our-town/history/): Grand Marais is one of the oldest place-names on the Great Lakes. The name is French for “big marsh”, which is puzzling as there is no marsh here. Historians believe that French mapmakers confused “marais” with another, similar-sounding word found on old maps, “maré”, which means “sheltered body of water”. The early voyageurs definitely sheltered here on their way to the western end of Lake Superior. The Chippewa fished along the shoreline here for many years before the arrival of settlers in the 1860s.
