Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Stretching for 50 miles along the Lake Superior
Shoreline, Pictured Rock National Lakeshore is a
mecca for nature lovers. One can hike the North
Country Trail, visit the shipwreck remains at
Au Sable Light Station (right), stand atop 300-foot
sand cliffs at the Log Slide, marvel at the wind-
sculpted beauty of the Pictured Rocks Cliffs, walk the forest trail to
beautiful Grand Sable Lake and Sable Falls,
camp in any one of a dozen campgrounds, or simply enjoy a picnic by the shore
of Twelvemile Beach. Rockhounds hunt (and find!) prize agates along these
shores.
Winter brings its own beauty as snowfall opens
the way for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
and snowmobiling on marked trails, plus ice fishing
on Grand Sable Lake.
There are visitor centers at both gateways to the Lakeshore, at the west end in Munising, and at the east end across from Sable Lake on county road H-58 (open Spring through Fall only). Information on backcounrty camping, cross-country skiing, and more is available by contacting the headquarters building in Munising.
